Menu Designs and Functionalities

My current problem right now is making and designing the menus to fit what functionality they need to be used for in the game. For example, the inventory menu is one that I've been struggling with the most in terms of how I want the screen to be laid out in a way that makes sense to the player but also isn't completely different from the theme of the gameplay. There's also an ability screen, that I currently only have a temporary sketch for, that will show the players abilities that they can get and use in the game, so there needs to be a way for them to see and activate them while understanding what they do in game before activating them.
The solution for this is honestly just more planning and using a trial and error method to see what works for the game and what I like for the final design. If I can get something that is functional, has a decent design, and isn't too crazy looking than I think that it'll work itself out in the long run.
